Power Hitting Catchers

After averaging 36 HR’s and 39 doubles in two short seasons in the minor leagues the Seattle Mariners have inserted Mike Zunino into their starting lineup.

Take a look at this long bomb he hit last night.

Zunino reminds me of former slugging catchers Mike Stanley and Mickey Tettleton.  At 23 years old and with power like this I would think they are set at receiver for at least the next five years.

Brian McCann’s Consistent Power

Much to my surprise Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann has literally had a hall-of-fame start to his career.  3 of his top 6 most similar batters through age 28 are in the HOF.

McCann ranks 8th all-time in home runs by a catcher through age 29.  His 162 HR’s are more than Ted Simmons, Bill Freehan, Gabby Hartnett, Carlton Fisk and Bill Dickey.

We don’t know what his 30’s will bring but McCann has a real shot at HOF numbers if he has another 5 productive seasons.
